Shredding unit for bulky cardboard boxes
England’s first public shredder for cardboard boxes has been installed in the Barking Riverside development area. 2,000 new flats have been built in the area, with 8,000 more to follow. Many of the furniture and appliances required for this are delivered in cardboard boxes. The public shredding plant is not just about shredding the cardboard, the system also includes a pipe system through which the shreds are extracted for recycling.
Museum documents women’s activities
A new museum has opened in the immediate neighbourhood of Barking Abbey that is dedicated entirely to women’s contribution to the development of the city. It is not just about the first strike in the car industry initiated by the seamstresses. Starting with early archaeological finds, the influence of women over the centuries is presented. The museum is also a meeting place for the neighbourhood and a venue for events.
hemse ships are in great demand
The shipping line from Barking Pier, which opened two years ago, has been very well received by the local population. Tourism does not play a major role here; the ships are mainly used for commuter traffic. Demand is so high that there are now discussions about running them all day. Until now, they have only been available in the morning until 10 a.m. and in the afternoon from 4 p.m. onwards.
Large quantities of counterfeit cigarettes
City council employees have been checking shops selling cigarettes. Fake “cigarettes” apparently have their own odour. In any case, with the help of sniffer dogs, the inspectors discovered over 80,000 counterfeit cigarettes worth £32,642, with a single shop selling over 50,000 cigarettes. This is the biggest success the inspectors have ever had. It’s clear that more checks are now being carried out as a result.
