Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Cllr Peter Chand and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell planted the tree, marking 73 years of close friendship with the German city.
The two communities have been officially twinned for 41 years.
Twinning, which brings together towns or cities so they can learn from each other, is particularly important to the Mayor.
Cllr Peter Chand said: “We have a special bond with Witten as our twinned town.
“It is an honour to have planted this friendship tree to cement our strong ties and ever-growing friendship.”

The Barking & Dagenham and Witten twinning arrangement is one of the oldest existing contacts between a German town and an English town.
The Colin Pond Foundation was set up in 2001 as a Trust Fund to provide grants for young people engaged on a professional training course. The main stipulation is that the apprenticeship, training course or study programme lead to a recognised qualification.
