Warming rooms with a programme

Heating costs are a major problem for some families. To support those who can no longer cope with these high costs, Barking and Dagenham has set up warming rooms, including at Kingsley Hall and the mosque in Barking. Anyone can go without registering. In addition to a pleasant environment where you can meet your neighbours, there are also a few programme items on offer, such as knitting instruction and Zumba.

Singing at railway stations

Since 2000, local transport services in the London area have been combined into one company, Transport for London (TfL). It is therefore celebrating an anniversary year. This has now been launched with 25 street singers greeting passengers at various railway stations. Each singer performed a 40-minute programme focusing on songs from one of the 25 years.

Faster route to Greenwich

The Silvertown tunnel will open on 7 April, together with the Blackwall tunnel, providing a new fast link from East London under the Thames to the Greenwich Peninsula. It will cost £4 to pass through, with Blawall being charged for the first time after 128 years of free travel. The new tunnel is being praised by the city’s leaders as a contribution to improving the air quality and reducing traffic, but environmental organisations fear the opposite effect. Several bus routes and express bus routes are to use the new connection.
